Bloomin good question really and not really tat possibel to answer, or do you mean the lowest you can get away with?

Actually, 1000 sounds about right mate but you can d it cheaper if you buy cheaper stuff.

Go to Ebay or something like a chap motorcycle store near you and you can pick up jackets for about 100, pants for about 70, boots for about 70 , gloves for about 50, helmet for about 100 - comes to about 400.

However, i would spend more money on comfy protective boots, a highly rated helmet that fits well and clothing that has armour in all the places that you would wish for.. like shoulders. hips, knees, elbox, back.

    Buy well, buy once.

Get the best that you can afford really. you can always upgrade later, bit by bit.
Also, you need two sets of clothing really, one for summer/sports and one for winter/general, though you could manage it all year round on the same stuff if it has removable liners i guess.

Motorbike shows are the best places to buy gear.

I'm still using the boots I got 19 years ago :D

You can buy budget gear that won't cost an arm and leg but they won't be the best protection for your arm or leg either ;)
It depends on your riding too. If its just commuting then you don't need as much protection as weekend blasting on a sports bike.

I bought a race suit on ebay for £99 plus £20 postage from Pakistan. Might sound like hokey crap and of course its not as good as a £600 Alpinestars suit but its bloody good for the price. They have good leather and hand crafting workmanship. Armour in the right places and very comfortable so I'm very happy with it. (Helps to be average size)

If you buy online you must know how to take your measurements.
Or try some clothing at a local bike shop to get your size.

I think you could get decent general riding (summer commuting) gear for £300-400
Sports bike riding would be more.
Winter would need extras of course.

If you go to a motorbike show or a decent bike store like Infinity Cycles you could get kitted out for a few hundred max.
Waterprrof and armoured jacket and pants textile set for about 100, boots for 70, helmet as little at 70, gloves for 30... under 300 all in.:)

Yeah, don't be too worried what to get first. You will inevitably get something different at some point.

I was originaly going to get a leather one piece for £200 on Ebay. However, after also suffering trying to get leathers on I have now decided that one MUST try these feckers on and it would be mad to order onine unless the suit is one you have already tried on.

I will opt for a two piece now, probably RST as they are cheaper.

Am popping over to P&H in Crawley today and might try some stuff on there.
