I have been out on a few test riders recently and the new bikes that i have been out on that HAD gear indicators were actually very handy.
Even on my bike I rarely know if I am in 5th or 6th. I often find myself travelling at 70 or so on a motorway and find myself trying to change up into a 7th gear that just isn't there! :)

I was never particularly bothered about them and the add-on ones are a bit naff but they are actually pretty handy.

Yep, thats one thing I wish my bike had.
I guess cost was prohibitive on older bikes and maybe now the technology has improved enough to make it more common?

I'd be happy just to have a 6th gear light.

I expect the older bikes didnt have the ecu or ease of conecting it to the circuitry or even woring the gear out.
bikes are so lectronic these days that it must be relatively simple.
hey dont cost much, about a 100 or so.
we can certainly manage without them, as many do, but it is a nice extra feature.
